Dr. Petersen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University. He is a certified speech-language pathologist with several years of clinical and research experience. His research is driven by a desire to greatly increase the prevalence of academic success for all children, including those who are culturally and linguistically diverse. His research is focused on multi-tiered systems of support, principles of dynamic assessment, and their application to language and reading assessment and intervention. His work focuses on turning the complex arena of language into simple, efficient, and effective assessment and intervention procedures. Dr. Petersen's research has resulted in dynamic assessments for decoding and language, progress monitoring tools for decoding and reading comprehension, and multi-tiered systems of support for language.
Dr. Petersen has taught courses on language assessment and intervention, language disorders, language science, research methods, multi-cultural topics in communication disorders, and stuttering.
Dr. Petersen continues to explore multi-tiered systems of support for language at the school and school-district level. He is actively engaged in the research and implementation of narrative-based language instruction across all tiers of support, and the examination of the validity and reliability of new assessment approaches that can identify children with language-related disorders and monitor reading and language progress over time.
