I originally studied journalism and communication from BYU–Idaho, literature at Utah State, then IP&T at BYU and the University of Georgia.

Previously, I was a sports journalist for the Idaho Falls Post Register and Logan Herald Journal. Since graduating with my PhD in 2009, I have only been at BYU as a faculty member!
4. What is your current job title? Please describe what you do in that position.
Professor of Instructional Psychology and Technology. I research how to innovate and advance education through improved and open educational content, strong learning communities, and open credentials that better recognize student learning.
5. What accomplishment are you most proud of?
In 2022 at the age of 45, I ran my first ultra-marathon (the “Not Your Grandma’s Marathon,” 26 miles on Provo trails and 8,500 feet of climbing!) and then scored a PR in the Big Cottonwood Canyon marathon two weeks later. I was pretty sore after that! ;-).

“The Packhorse: Stories of a Father Carrying His Kids’ Stuff around the World.”
7. Where could we find you on most Saturday mornings?
Running a trail and listening to an audiobook! I love all genres, but especially history, nonfiction, children’s literature, and classic literature. Hit me up with a good recommendation!
8. Would you rather spend a night out on the town or stay home inside with a book?
I love seeing and experiencing new things, so definitely a night on the town. I love attending concerts, sporting events, trying new food, visiting museums, and just seeing new things, especially from new cultures. And I especially enjoy experiencing these things with other people!
9. What is one thing you can’t live without?
My family. My oldest kids have started leaving for college, and that’s been hard!
