Tell the children they will clean up the clutter in the class closet as they read and write words with the /cl/ blend, such as class, closet. clothes, clutter, clown, and clean.

Literacy Activities
Clean the closet

• Show the children a /cl/ blend, ask them to help name words that start with /cl/ then you write them on the board.
• Explain that the /cl/ blend is made with the letters c and l and have the children take turns underlining the blend in the words on the board.
• Direct the children's attention to the closet (or paper closet door with /cl/ picture cards taped to it) and explain that the clutter (mess) in the closet needs to be cleaned up.
• Let the children take turns picking /cl/ pictures and objects out of the closet (or off the door).
• Each time a card is picked, instruct the child to say the word out loud and then put it on the cloth you've laid on a table.
• Throughout the activity, emphasize words and phrases containing /cl/ words.

Read target words

• Display the Clutter in the Closet text for the children to see.
• Read the text to the children.
• Read through the text once more, instructing the children to pick out each /cl/ word.
• Have the children underline each /cl/ blend they see in the text.

Write about the activity

• With the children, write a list of /cl/ words they heard in the activity on the board, such as clean, clear, closet, clutter, clothes, close, and clown.
• Have the children write 2-3 sentences about cleaning the closet, using two or more /cl/ words in each sentence (e.g., We cleaned the closet. We cleared the clutter. A clown was in the closet.)
