State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that today they will name their own balloon slugs as they listen for the /sl/ sounds at the beginning of words.

Literacy Activities
Play with slugs

  • Prepare balloon slugs for the children by filling balloons with flour. Insert the funnel into the mouth of the balloon, then pour flour into the funnel until the balloon is filled.
  • Distribute a pretend slug to each child.
  • Read the Slugs Slink Slowly text to the class, emphasizing words that begin with the /sl/ blend.
  • Instruct the children to act out the story with their slugs as you read the story again.
  • Help the children come up with slug names that start with /sl/ (e.g., Slider Slug or Slimy Slug), and write the name options on the board.
  • Demonstrate for the children how to write the slug’s name on the label in marker, then stick the label on the side of the slug.

More Practice
Read target words

  • Read the Slugs Slink Slowly text to the class, emphasizing words that begin with the /sl/ blend. Pause intermittently as you read to act out the story with the children and their pretend slugs.
  • Display the text for the children to see. Give each child a turn to find and underline a /sl/ blend word in the text.

Write about the activity

  • As a class, create a list of words that begin with /sl/ sound. Display the list for the children to see. Include words from the text as well as any new words.
  • Give each child a slug worksheet.
  • Instruct the children to write a sentence next to each slug on the worksheet that includes at least two /sl/ blend words. Provide support as necessary.
