- Music on a phone or player
- Start and Stop target text
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that today they are going to play a game called Start and Stop as they listen for words beginning with the letters /st/.
Literacy Activities
Start and Stop
- Explain to the children that when the music starts, that they can stomp, stamp, and do dance steps. But when the music stops, they must stand still like a stone statue!
- As a class, make a list of action words that begin with /st/.
- List the Start and Stop target text on the board for the children to see.
- Play the music, and perform each line of the Start and Stop chant. Stop the music at the appropriate times during the chant.
- Emphasize the action word and the spelling of the action word as you perform it.

Read target words
- As a group, make a list of /st/ words that were used in the activity: start, stop, stomp, stamp, step, stand, still, stone, statue, etc.
- Read through the list together as a class.
Write about the activity
- Using the word list the group made, have the children write 2-3 sentences about the activity.
