Tell the children that they will pretend to feed Charlie chocolate and cherries and read and write words beginning with ch-.

Literacy Activities
Chomp and chew

• Print Charlie puppet graphic onto cardstock (or glue printout to cardstock or cardboard) then attach Ziploc bag (optional) to the back of the mouth per instructions on the graphic.
• Write the words chomp and chew on the board and explain that when c and h are written together they make the /ch/ sound.
• Explain to the children that Charlie only likes to chomp and chew foods that begin with the letters ch.
• Invite the children to take turns choosing a real, paper, or pretend food to feed to Charlie. 
• As the children choose a food, have them read the name of the food on the card (give support if needed).
  • If the food starts with the /ch/ sound, instruct the child to put it into Charlie’s mouth and say, “Charlie chomps and chews ___.”
  • Have the children set aside any non-ch foods.
• Make a list of all the ch foods Charlie chomped and chewed.
• Optional: Give each child chips or chocolate to chomp and chew.

More Practice
Read target words in a text

• Ask the children to help make up a recipe using the ch foods from the activity (e.g., Chewy Chocolate Cherries or Cheesy Chips).
• Display the recipe for the children to see and read it together as a class.
• Have the children choose and underline the beginning ch combinations they find in the recipe.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

• Help the children make up their own brief recipe using ch foods from the list they create.
• Instruct the children to underline each ch word in their recipe.
• Have the children read their recipes to a partner.
