Target Words:

Materials:

  • Crunchy food (e.g., carrots, crackers, celery)—1 piece for each child
  • Punch—any kind of juice or water (optional)
  • Small cups
  • Napkins
  • Munch on Lunch target text 

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that today they are going to munch on lunch as they read and write words ending in -ch.

Literacy Activities
Much on lunch

  • Tell the children that they get to have a pretend lunch.
  • Separate the children into different bunches or groups in which they can eat their lunch.
  • Give each child a piece of crunchy food as they sit in their bunch.
  • Explain it’s time to munch their lunch. They can munch and crunch as they eat crunchy food for lunch.
  • Ask the children if they would like to have punch with their lunch and pass out a bunch of small cups of punch (optional).

More Practice
Read target words in a text

  • Read the Munch on Lunch target text to the children. 
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
  • Read the text again fading support.
  • Have the children list the words from the text that are spelled with the -ch ending.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Review or make a list of words that end in -ch, such as lunch, munch, punch, and crunch.
  • Write the following prompt on the board: “Let’s go to lunch with a bunch of friends. At lunch, we will ___ ___.” (e.g., At lunch, we will munch.)
  • Have the children create 1 or 2 sentences by completing the prompt using words from the list.
