State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will meet a king and will read and write words ending in -ng, such as string, swing, ring, and song.

Literacy Activities
Put a king and ring on a string

  • Have the children identify the ng if the words king, ring, sing, bang, song, string, and swing.
  • Read the target text A King on a String (found below) to the class 
  • Read the text again and act out the text for the children to see.

Let the king do things  

  • List actions that end in ng (e.g., fling a string, bang on a gong, spring up, sing a song, cling to a string, make a ting with some rings, swing a string, sling a thing in a slingshot, wring some string, string a ring on a string, fling a string, make a ping with rings).
  • Identify words in the list of actions that end in ng.
  • Tell the children that the king can do things.
  • Act out -ng things that the king can do to the children.

More Practice
Write about things the king can do

  • Read the list of -ng action words: sling, ring, sting, string, fling, bring, bang, sing, swing, cling, and spring up.
  • Instruct the children to write about some things that the king does. 
  • Have the children write -ng action words on a paper or a king’s crown.
  • Have the children write ring on the paper or on a paper ring.
