Materials:

  • Quail covey graphic (see below)
  • Quail headbands (made prior to activity)
  • Feather graphic (or real feathers) to attach to quail headbands
  • Qu and non-qu word cards – spread around room and taped on wall
  • Quails Go Quickly target text
  • Quails Coo target text

State and model the objective
Tell the children that today they will pretend to be a group of quail as they read and write words beginning in qu.

Practice the skill with an activity

Covey of quail

  • Tell the children that a group of quail is called a "covey".
  • Explain to the children that when quail are young, they follow their parents around and do everything their parents do.
  • Tell the children that you will be the parent quail. Give each child a headband. Have the children follow you around the room as you gather word cards. Each time you pick up a qu word card, have the class say the word with you.
    • Note: This activity will be a variation of the game Simon Says.
  • Lift up one of the word cards. Have one of the children read the card (give assistance if necessary) or read the card together as a group.
  • Have the children act out the action if it is a qu word. If the word does not begin with qu, the children should stand still and not move.
  • End the game by saying, “Quails quit!”
  • If desired, repeat activity, and have the children take turns leading the group as the parent quail.

Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity

  • Have the children read and underline the qu in the Quails Go Quickly target text and Quails Coo text.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Review and make a list of the action words that begin with the /kw/ sound from the game.
  • Have the children write and illustrate a book about quail, including some of the /kw/ things they did.
