State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to be quails and will read and write words beginning in qu, such as quail, quick, quiet, and quit.

Literacy Activities
Read words with qu-

• List qu- words for the children to see.
• Point to the qu in the words one at a time.
• Have the children read the qu- as /kw/ while you read the rest of the qu- words.

Covey of quail

• Tell the children that the letters qu make the /kw/ sound.
• Explain that when quails are young, they do what their parents do. 
• Tell the children that you will be the parent quail. 
• Display the written command strips (found below). 
• Each time you read a sentence, have the children read it after you.
• Have the children act out the commands on the strips.
• Read “Quit being quails” as the last command.

• Have the children read and underline the qu- in the texts.

Write about the activity

• Have the children write about quails and include other qu- words.
