  • Change the beginning consonant(s): foxbox, clocksblocks, rockssocks
  • Change the ending: foxfog, boxbop, blocksblots, sockssobs, boxblocks, sixsticks, fixflicks, saxsacks, laxlacks
  • Change the vowels: foxfix, sockssacks, clocksclucks

Read target words in texts

  • Engage the children in reading the target text Pack Snacks and Socks in a Box (see below) together.
  • Read the target text again, fading support.
  • Have the children make a list of the -x and -cks words in the text.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Let the children write words from dictation that end in -x (e.g., fox, box, fix, six, sax, lax).
  • Have children write words from dictation that end in cks (e.g., socks, blocks, clocks, rocks, docks, sticks, flicks, sacks, lacks, clucks, locks).
  • Engage the children in writing about a fox or a box and ask them to use some of the -x  and -cks words.
