State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will select times to do certain things and will read and write words with the long-i-silent-e pattern, such as time, dime, fine, twice, bike, and rice.
Literacy Activities
Decide what time to do things
- Show the clock graphic (see below).
- Let the children select time slips (see below) and decide a time to do the various activities (e.g., “7:00 is time to rise”).
Read a text
- Read the target text When Is It Time? (see below) with the class.
- Read again, fading support.
Write about nice and fine times to do things
- Engage the children in creating a word wall with long-i words, including nice, fine, time, ride, bike, like, lime, chime, ride, hike, shine, rice, mice, slide, wide, dine, line, slime.
- Have the children write from a prompt about times to do things. (e.g., “It is a fine time to . . .” “It is a nice time to . . .” “I like it when it is time to . . .” etc.)
