State the Objective

Tell the children that they will eat with a beak and that they will read and write long-e words with the ea spelling, such as eat, beak, peas, peach, treat, and speak.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Show the children the long-e target words.
  • Read the words with the children.

Eat with a beak

  • Read the My Beak Can Eat target text (see below) with the children and use your hand as a beak.
  • Choose a child to pick a picture card (see below) that the beak will eat.
  • Have the beak only eat long-e words with the ea spelling.
  • Let the children take a turn using their hands as the beak.

Write sentences using target words phrases

  • Let the children write short sentences using target words.
    • If I had a beak, I would eat ____ (beans, peas, meats, peaches etc.)
    • Can the ____ (beak) eat beans?
    • The beak can eat a ____ (peach).
    • What a ____ (treat) for the beak!
