State and Model the Objective
The children will meet a pirate named Clark and then read and write words spelled with -ar, such as car, star, candy bar, card, scarf, spark, and shark.

Literacy Activities
Make Clark say “Arr!”     

  • Show the children the picture of Clark the Pirate (found below).
  • Help the children read the sentence strips (found below). 
  • Make Clark say "Arr!" in different situations:
    • There’s a shark! Clark says “ARR!
    • There's a bright star. Clark says “ARR!
    • Clark is far away from the X that marks the spot! Clark says “ARR!
    • Clark sees a spark. Clark says “ARR!
    • Clark doesn’t hit a target with a dart! Clark says “ARR!
    • Clark marks the course on the chart. Clark says “ARR!

Put words with -ar in a treasure chest

  • Choose a child to leave the room while you hide one of the word cards in the room.
  • Have the child search for the card while the other children help by saying “Far” or “Not far.”
  • Have the children read the other words on the cards in Clark's treasure chest.
