State and Model the Objective
The children will pretend to go to a fair and then read and write about going to a fair using words spelled with -air and -are, such as fair, hair, chair, air, stare, and share.
 
Literacy Activities
Go to the fair

  • Show the children the fair graphic. 
  • Have the children pretend to ride a bus to the fair.
  • Read the first paragraph of the Pay Your Fare to Go to the Fair target text, and act it out with the children.
  • Pretend with the children that you have arrived at the fair.
  • Read the second paragraph of the Pay Your Fare to Go to the Fair target text, and act it out with the children.

Get a scare at the fair 

  • With the children, act out letting a paper doll go on a scary ride at the fair.
    • Follow the instructions below to make hair for the doll. 
    • Let the doll’s hair blow in the air while sitting in the chair.
    • Wave the doll in the air, and let her hair blow in the air while sitting in the chair.
    • Pretend to be scared on the scary ride at the fair.

More Practice
Read target words in texts

  • Read the Pay Your Fare to Go to the Fair target text to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the target text. 
  • Have the children make a list of the words spelled with -air and a list of words spelled with -are.
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Repeat with the Get a Scare at the Fair target text.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Let the children write words as you say them: air, hair, fair, chair, stare.
  • Have the children write about what they did (e.g., “I felt the air in my hair. I sat in a chair at the fair.).

Make hair for a doll 

  1. Wrap the yarn around a child’s flat hand.
  2. Slide the yarn off the child’s hand, and tie it in the middle with a piece of yarn.
  3. Cut the yarn loops on either side of the middle tie.
