State and Model the Objective
The children will take care of a doll’s hair and then read and write words spelled with -air or -are, such as air, hair, chair, share, and care.
Literacy Activities
Make and take care of hair
- Make hair for a doll
- Wrap the yarn around a child’s flat hand.
- Slide the yarn off the child’s hand, and tie it in the middle with a piece of yarn.
- Cut the yarn loops on either side of the middle tie.
- Have the children follow these instructions:
- Sit the paper doll without hair in a chair.
- Let a child place the hair on the doll.
- Let a child pretend to brush the doll's hair as a way to care for it.
- Put a little water on the doll’s hair.
- Let a child wave the doll in the air to make the doll’s hair fly in the air.
Dry hair with air
- Put hair made out of yarn on the paper doll’s head.
- Let the children dab a little water on the doll's hair.
- Let a child dry the hair by fanning some air on the hair.
- Let a child shake the doll’s hair in the air to dry the hair.
- Let a child blow air on the hair.
- Let a child dry the hair with hot air from a blow-dryer.
- Comment on the many ways to dry hair with air.
Draw and write words
- Have the children draw a chair, some stairs, and hair on a piece of paper.
- Ask the children to write the words chair, stair, and hair on their drawings.
- Sprinkle a little water on the words and wave the paper in the air to dry the words.
