  • Dog graphic or toy dog
  • Water bowl
  • Signs with -ur
  • Long sock 
  • Long ears and tongue graphic
  • Dog-bone word cards 
  • Word-building cards 
  • My Dog Slurps and Burps target text 

State and Model the Objective
The children will act out a story where a dog slurps and burps and then read and write words spelled with -ur, such as burp, slurp, turn, fur, blur, burn, and curb.

Literacy Activities
See the dog slurp and burp

  • Read the My Dog Slurps and Burps target text to the children.
  • Have the children act out the text using the dog graphic and the water bowl:
    • Make slurping noises and pretend that a dog slurps water from the bowl.
    • Pretend that the dog burps and then slurps again.
    • Pretend that the dog gets water in his fur.
    • Laugh while watching the dog slurp and burp.
    • Take turns making the dog slurp and burp.

Find -ur words with the slurping, burping dog

  • Make a dog sock puppet by using the long sock and the long ears and tongue graphics.
  • Introduce the children to your slurping, burping dog (sock puppet) who likes to slurp and burp words that have the -ur sound in them.
  • Help the children read the dog-bone word cards with you.
  • Let the children take turns reading a word card and then feeding the card to the dog while listening for the slurps and burps.

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • Have the children use the word-building cards to make new words by changing the vowels, the beginning consonants, or the end consonants:
    • Change the beginning sound(s): slurp→ burp; turn→ churn; fur→ blur
    • Change the vowel sound: fur→ for; turn→ torn; burn→ barn
    • Change the ending sound: curb→ curt; burp→ burn; blur→ blurt

Read target words in texts

  • Read the My Dog Slurps and Burps target text to the children and while pointing out the words with the    -ur sound.
  • Engage the children in reading the target text with you.
  • Give each of the children a -ur sign and explain that, when a -ur word is read, they should hold up their sign.
  • Read the target text together again while watching for raised cards and supporting as needed.

Write about the activity using target words and patterns

  • Have the children make a list of the words spelled with -ur.
  • Ask them to write words as you say them: slurp, burp, turn, fur, blur.
