State and Model the Objective
The children will slide lids and read long i and short i words: slid vs. slide; hid vs. hide; rid vs. ride
Literacy Activities

  • Illustrate ways to act on lids using the slanted board or book:  
    • hide a lid
    • slide a lid
    • slide a lid from side to side
    • get rid of a lid
    • slide a lid from kid to kid
  • Have students read and act out the text Things to Do With Lids (found below).

Read and write about sliding lids

  • Engage the students in shared reading about lids in the text Things We Did With Lids (found below).
  • Show a list of short and long-vowel words: rid, ride, lid, glide, slidslide, side, stride, hid, hide, did, skid, wide.
  • Let the students write about the things they did with lids.  
  • Have the children make changes in words, for example:
    • Rid  → ride
    • Ride  → rid
    • Grid  → rid
    • Skid  → kid
    • Kit  → kite
