State and Model the Objective
The children will make a stew and then read and write words that end with -ew, such as new, blew, grew, screw, and strew.

Literacy Activities
Make a stew of screws

  • Explain that -ew makes the long u sound.
  • Tell the children that they will make a stew with a slew (a lot) of screws.
  • Have the children draw a screw and label it or a screw graphic as screw.
  • Let the children put the screws into the stew and stir the pretend stew.

Make a stew of -ew words

  • Cut out the word cards and let the children put the cards into a pot.
  • Allow the children to pretend to stir the stew.
  • Have the children choose word cards from the stew and read them aloud.

 More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • Explain that -ew makes the long u sound.
  • With word-building cards, have the children make new words by changing the beginning consonant(s):
    • blew → grew, drew → stew, new → dew, chew → flew, threw → crew

Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity

  • Read the A Stew with a Slew of Screws target text to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the target text with you.
  • Read the text with the children again, fading support.
  • Have the children take turns underlining the -ew spelling pattern.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Have the children write words that end with -ew as you say them: dew, drew, new, few, knew, blew, grew, crew, flew, chew, stew, slew, and screw.
  • Post a list of -ew words and have the children write sentences using the words (e.g., "I drew a screw and put it in a stew.").
