Overview
The children will slip letters into slits to make words with the /i/ sound, such as kid, lid, kit, lip, pin, fin, bin, and fin.

Literacy Activities
Slip letters in slits

• Cut along the paper with dotted lines to make slits.
• Let the children pick picture cards to place in the box above the slits.
• Tell the children to say the sounds in each word then choose letter cards that match the sounds in the word (e.g., k + i + d = kid).
• Have the children put the letter cards in order on the lines below the picture to make the word (e.g., kid, lid, kit, lip, pin, fin, bin, fin).
• Point out that each word has the letter I, which makes the /i/ sound.
• Make a list of words spelled with i: kid, lid, kit, lip, pin, fin, bin, fin.

Put word cards in a tin

• Show the children several tins.
• Put word cards with the /i/ sound in the tins.
• Mix up the tins and let the children open each tin.
• Have the children read each word and underline the letter I in the word, emphasizing that the letter I makes the /i/ sound.
• Let the children make their own word cards to put in tins by writing words with the short /i/ sound on small pieces of paper.

• Read the Slip It in and Make It Fit target text together as a class.
• Have the children underline the letter I in words with the /i/ sound.
• Read the text again, fading support.

Write the target letter

• Write the uppercase I and lowercase i on the whiteboard, then have the children name the letter and practice writing it in the air with their fingers.
• Give each child a whiteboard and have them write words from dictation, changing one or two letters each time to make a new word:
  • pin → pit → lit → lip → lid → bid → bad → bat → sat → sit → sip → hip → tip → tin
