Objective

Read and write words that end with the long e vowel pattern –y.

Materials:

  • A large pot with a towel covering the top
  • Images (see below) or actual items to hide in the pot (i.e., penny, ball of yarn, rock, history or mystery books, small plastic spider or cricket, candy)
  • Word cards (see below)
  • Icky Crazy Soup target text (see below)
  • Mouse Soup by Arnold Lobel (HarperCollins Publishers, 2011) (optional)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will make an icky, yucky soup and they will read and write words with the long e vowel pattern –y: quickly, shiny, penny, prickly, frizzy, tiny, dirty, many, sticky.

 

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Icky Soup
    • Read Mouse Soup by Arnold Lobel together with the children and have them find words in the story that end with –y (optional).
    • Read the word cards (see below) with the children and point out that all of the words end with the long e vowel pattern –y.
    • Show the children the large pot and explain that the pot has many crazy things for an icky soup.
    • Let the children reach into the pot and pull out the items one at a time.
    • Have the children choose a word card to describe each item from the pot (e.g., shiny penny, fuzzy yarn, dusty history book, dirty rock, tiny spider, sticky candy).
    • Help the children make a list of the word and object combinations.
    • Have the children put the items back in the pot and comment that they made a crazy, yucky soup.

 

 

Apply the skill (Choose from the activities below)

  • Read target words in texts
    • Have the children underline the words that end with –y in the target text Icky Crazy Soup (see below).
    • Read the text Icky Crazy Soup to the children.
    • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
    • Read the Icky Crazy Soup text again fading support.
  • Write about the activity using target words/patterns
    • Display target words on a word wall (i.e., shiny, fuzzy, dusty, dirty, tiny, sticky, prickly, penny, candy) and let the children write about the lesson activity or target text using words from the word wall (e.g., We put fuzzy yarn in a crazy soup).
    • Allow the children to randomly match word cards with objects from the activity then have them write “This is silly” or “This could really happen” to indicate whether or not the word combinations make sense.

It’s almost dinner time!
Quickly, quickly, we need to find many things for a goopy soup!
One shiny penny,
Two prickly thorns,
Three frizzy balls of yarn,
Four tiny rocks,
Five bits of dirty moss,
Six jars of messy jelly,
Seven itsy-bitsy spiders,
Eight shrimpy crickets,
Nine yummy blueberries,
Ten drippy kitty cats,
And thirty sticky stickers!
It’s fun to make an icky, sticky, goopy soup!
