Target Words:

  • bright
  • night
  • light
  • right
  • sight

Materials:

  • Pictures of a firefly (see graphics below) -- several copies
  • Flashlight
  • Fireflies target text (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that today they will be playing with fireflies (explain whtat a firefly is, if needed) as they read and write words that end in -ight (e.g. bright, light, night, sight).

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Fireflies at night
    • Divide the children into two groups. Give the children in one group a picture of a firefly and the children in the other group a flashlight.
    • Have one child hold up her firefly and have another child shine the flashlight on the firefly, so the firefly makes a bright light. Explain that the bright firefly's light blinks on and off. Have the child holding the flashlight turn it on and off to be like the firefly's light.
    • Pass out a firefly to each child, have them spread out around the room, and tell them to hold up their fireflies as they stand very still.
    • Turn out some or all of the lights and explain that fireflies only shine at night.
    • Give one child the flashlight and have him/her shine the flashlight on the fireflies held up by the other children.
    • Let the children take turns shining the flashlight on the fireflies and comment on how fireflies make the night bright with all their lights.

Apply the skill

  • Read target words in a text
    • Engage the children in shared reading of the Fireflies target text (see below).
    • Let the children read the text with less support or independently.
    • Shine the light on words that end in -ight and have the children read them.
  • Write target words
    • Have the children write words that end with -ight on a firefly graphic. Shine the flashlight on each child's firefly. Have the children read their -ight words when the light is right on their firefly.

Firefly Poem

Sometimes at night, before the moon shines bright...
you can see a little light...
floating in the night...
floating left and right.
But don't take fright.
It's just a little bug in flight.
It carries its own light.
Lots of little lights...
floating in the night.
What a sight!

Fireflies

Sometimes at night, you can see a flickering light.
You can see the light floating in the night.
You can see the light before the moon shines bright.
It seems to float left and right.
But don't take fright.
It's just a little bug in flight.
It carries its own light.
Lots of little lights float in the night.
What a sight!
