Fly a Kite Tonight

Objective

Read and write words with long i vowel pattern –igh (e.g., tonight, flight).

Materials:

  • Kite parts (see graphics below)
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Wooden craft sticks (two per kite)
  • Scissors and tape/glue
  • Short length of string (one per kite)
  • Kite graphic (see below) for a writing activity
  • Fly a Kite Tonight target text (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will pretend to go on a picnic and fly a kite and they will read and write words spelled with -igh: sight, flight, might, tonight.

 

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Make a bright kite
    • Write bright kite on the board and point out that both words have the long i sound, but they have different spellings.
    • Explain that kite is spelled with the long i silent e pattern, and bright is spelled with the –igh pattern.
    • Invite the children to color the kite parts (see graphics below) with bright colors.
    • Ask the children to write bright kite on the diamond kite part.
    • Instruct the children to cut out the diamond (kite) and triangle (tail) kite parts.
    • Have the children tape or glue the wooden craft sticks together in the shape of a lowercase t.
    • Tell the children to tape or glue the diamond onto the craft sticks so that it looks like a kite.
    • Help the children tape or glue the triangles to string then have them attach the string to one end of the kite to make a tail.
  • Fly a kite at night
    • Help the children read the words on the word cards (see below).
    • Point out that all of the words are spelled with the long i vowel pattern –igh.
    • Let the children attach the word cards to the tail of the previously assembled kite.
    • Allow the children to pretend to fly the kite at night.
    • Make comments such as the following to emphasize words that end with –ight:
      • The kite might take flight.
      • Hold tight with all your might to the string of your kite.
      • It’s a delight to fly a kite on a bright night.

 

Apply the skill

  • Read target words in a text
    • Engage the children in reading the target text Fly a Kite Tonight (see below) together with the group.
    • Have the children make a list of the words in the text with spelled with -igh.
    • Read the text again fading support.
  • Write about the activity using target words/patterns
    • Create a word wall with words from the activity: night, flight, might, tight, sight, right, fight, fright, tonight, delight.
    • Give the children a kite graphic (see below) and have them write about flying a kite at night using words from the word wall.
