The children will play with clay and then read and write words that end with -ay, such as spray, stay, pay, may, and day.  

Literacy Activities
Play with clay

• Explain that today is “Clay Day!”
• Give each child a coin from the coin graphic and let them pretend to pay for a piece of clay and a tray.
• Allow the children to play with the clay.
• Hold the sentence strips up one at a time and encourage the children to perform the actions specified in the sentences:
  • Play with clay today.
  • Make the clay sway.
  • Lay the clay on the tray.
  • Stick the clay on the tray so it stays.
  • Spray the clay.
  • Spray the tray.
  • Display the clay (hold it up for all to see).
  • Put the clay away.
• When it’s time to put the clay away, allow each child to use the spray bottle to spray the remaining clay off the tray.
• Have each child put his or her tray away.

More Practice 
Read target words in texts

• Read the Clay Day target text to the children.
• Engage the children in reading the target text with you.
• Have the children make a list of the words that end with -ay.
• Read the text again, fading support.
• Repeat with the Clay Play text.

Write about the activity using target words and patterns

• Let the children write -ay words in clay (e.g., clay, tray, sway, stay, may, pay, way, and spray).
• Invite the children to write words that end in -ay from dictation. 
• Let the children write about what they did during the activity using some of these words.
