  • face
  • case
  • base
  • place

Materials:

  • CD cases
  • Paper plates
  • Jumbo craft sticks
  • Race a Case target text

State and Model the Objective
The children will race face-to-face, race cases, and then read long-a–silent-e words that end with -ace and -ase, such as face, race, case, base, and place.

Literacy Activities
Race face-to-face

  • Pair up the children.
  • Have the pairs draw a face on one side of a paper plate.
  • Have the children glue a jumbo craft stick to the plate (to hold).
    • Explain that one child in the pair will place the paper plate on one side of their face.
    • Instruct the other child to place their face against the plate.
  • Tell the pairs that they must work together to not let the plate fall.
  • Explain that you will tell them to go at a slow or fast pace during the race.
  • Repeat the activity as desired.

Race a Case

  • Have the children make two teams.
  • Designate a base on the other side of the room that the children can try to slide their case to.
  • Display the Race a Case target text so that the children can see it.
  • Read the target text to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the target text with you while you underline the long-a–silent-e words that the children identify.
  • Designate one child from each team to quickly slide their case to the base every time they see, or hear, the underlined long-a–silent-e words as the class reads the target text again.
  • The case that makes it to the base first wins.
  • Repeat until the end of the target text.

More Practice
Write about the activity using target words and patterns

  • Write a prompt on the board (e.g., In a face-to-face race, we got to . . .).
  • Have the children tell you ideas.
  • Guide the children’s responses with questions or prompts.
    • We found a ___(place or base) for the ___(race).
    • We put a ___(face) by each ___(place).
    • We got to race a ___(case from place to place or from face to face).
  • Have the children write 2–3 sentences about the face-to-face race.
