Literacy Activities

Move feet to a beat down a street

  • Set up a pretend street with strips of paper, blocks, masking tape, or chalk.
  • Have the children trace their feet on paper and place their paper feet along the street.
  • Let the children beat their own feet down the street to a beat.
  • Chant the target text Beat Your Feet Down the Street (see below) with the children.

Meet and greet on a street

  • Have the children write and pass out invitations that say “Meet and greet on the street.”
  • Designate a sidewalk or walkway to be a pretend street and let the children use chalk to trace their feet along the street.
  • Have the children follow the traced feet to meet and greet on the street.
  • Comment on how neat it is to meet and greet on a street.

Eat a treat on a sheet

  • Tell the children that they can meet and eat a treat on a sheet.
  • Ask the children to make the sheet neat (smooth it out).
  • Tell the children to take a seat on the sheet to get a treat to eat.
  • Provide a real or pretend treat—a treat that is sweet or not sweet.
  • Say, “It is fun to meet and eat a treat on a sheet.”

Recognize two ways to write the long e (ee and ea)

  • Involve the children in making a list of words that end in the spellings -eat or -eet.
  • Place the words in two columns: -eet and -eat.

Write about meeting and greeting on a street

  • Display the list of words ending in eet or eat.
  • Ask the children to write about how they got to:
    • Beat their feet down a street.

    • Take the street to a seat on a sheet
    • Sit on the sheet and eat a treat.
