State and model the objective
The children will win a prize for fries and will read and write words with the long i spellings -ize, -ise and -ies: rise, wise, prize, size, flies, tries, fries.
Literacy activities
Try some French fries
- Give the children big and little paper fries or have them cut out big and little rectangles to be fries (found below).
- Instruct the children to find the biggest fry.
- Give the children a pretend prize for having a big fry.
- Have the children write "A prize for a big sized fry."
See flies on fries
- Attach pictures of flies (found below) to strings and put the flies on fries.
- Comment on seeing flies on fries.
- Give the children boxes of fries (found below) or have them fold paper to make a box, envelope or pack for fries.
- Have the children write Big Size Fries on the fry box or pack.
- Have the children shoo away the flies and watch them rise up and leave the fries.
- Comment that it's not wise to let flies be on fries.
Make words with -ies, -ise or -ize
- Have the children read the word cards (found below).
- Let the children sort the word cards according to the spelling pattern: -ies, -ize, -ise.
Phonological awareness
- With letter cards (found below), have the children make new words by changing the beginning consonant(s):
fries → tries; flies → spies; prize → size; rise → wise
Have the children change words spelled with -y to the plural -ies:
fry → fries; spy → spies; try → tries; sky → skies
Read target words in texts
- Engage the children in reading the target text He Spies Flies on His Fries (found below).
- Have the children make a list of the words spelled with -ize, -ise and -ies.
- Repeat with the target text Prize for Fries (found below).
Write about the activity using target words/patterns
- Display the list of words with -ise, -ize and -ies (e.g., rise, wise, prize, size, flies, tries, fries).
- Have the children write sentences about prizes for big sized fries and flies on fries (e.g., "I won a prize because of the size of my fries").
