- Cups, pitcher, and spoon
- Real or pretend dimes
- Metal to make a chiming sound
- Pictures of slices of limes*

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children they will buy a lime drink with a dime, and read and write words with the long i silent e vowel (e.g., line, dime).
Literacy Activities
Give a dime for a lime drink
- Make a lime drink or pretend to make a lime drink.
- Let the children stir or pretend to stir the drink until they hear a chime.
- Strike a metal object and say, “I hear the chime.”
- Tell the children that they can buy a slice of lime or lime drink with a dime.
- Ring the chime every time a child buys a lime or lime drink with a dime.
Phonological awareness
- Have the children make words by changing either of the consonants:
- line→ lime, pile→ pine, dine→ dime, slime→ lime, time→ lime, like→ bike, size→ side, wide→ hide, mine→ mice, dice→ dime
Read target words
- Read the target text Get in Line for a Lime with the children.
- Read the text again, fading support.
- Have the children find the words with long i and silent e.
Write about the activity
- Display a word wall with words, such as lime, dime, dine, chime, ice, mice, nice, rice, kite, dice, bike, spice, price, slice, smile, five, slime, fine, time, line, pile
- Have the children write about standing in line to buy things with dimes:
- "If I had a pile of dimes, I would…"
- "I would use a dime and stand in line to…"
- "For a dime, I would dine on…"
- "A dime is a nice price for…"
