State and Model the Objective
Tell the children they will make grass grow, mow the grass, and read and write words spelled with -o and -ow, such as go, grow, mow, and slowly.
Literacy Activities
Make grass grow in rows
- Print the picture of growing grass (see below) and fold and cut where indicated.
- Tape the folded picture in rows on a table.
- Have the children pretend to watch the grass grow in rows.
- Place word cards (see below) in rows among the grass.
- Have the children go slowly along each row and read the word on each card.
Go slowly as you mow
- Have the children use the picture of a lawn mower (see below) as they pretend to mow the grass.
- Exclaim, “Oh no! Go slowly! Be careful to mow the grass in rows.”
- Have the children write the sentence, “I go slowly as I mow.”
More Practice
Read target words in texts
- Engage the children in reading the text Go Slowly As You Mow (see below).
- Have the children write a list of the -o and -ow words.
- Read the text again, fading support.
Write about the activity using target words and patterns
- Let the children write words from dictation (e.g., go, no, so, oh, grow, mow, row, low, slowly).
- Have the children write about mowing grass in rows (e.g., “I can go slowly and mow grass in a row. I can mow grass and cut it so low. I can watch grass grow up in a row.”).
