State the Objective
Tell the children that they will make a cube out of a tube and that they will read and write long-u words, such as too, cube, tube, cute, tool, and spoon.
Literacy Activities
Introduce target words
- Show the children the long-u target words and read them together.
- Explain that the u in long-u-silent-e words (e.g., tube, cube, cute) makes the long-u sound.
Make a cube from a tube
- Read the Make a Cube From a Tube target text (see below) with the children.
- Show the Make Your Own Activity Game Dice out of a Paper Roll video, by Timm Sevitz (optional).
- Show the children how to make a cube from a tube.
- Help the children write a sentence about cubes and tubes (e.g., We can make a cube from a tube; We use tools to make a cube; The cube we made is cute).
Read and sort long-u words
- Have the children take turns reading the long-u word cards (see below) aloud.
- Help the children sort the long-u words based on the spelling pattern.
- u_e words: tube, cube, cute, dude
- oo words: too, tool, spoon, boot
- Have the children write long-u words from dictation (e.g., too, cube, tube, cute, tool, spoon).
Contrast the number of letters and sounds
- List long-u target words (e.g., too, cube, tube, cute, tool, spoon).
- Remind the children that the silent e at the end of words like tube, cube, and cute makes the u say its name.
- Write a long-u-silent-e word (e.g., cube) and ask:
- How many letters does it have? (e.g., four: c + u + b + e)
- How many sounds does it have? (e.g., three: c + ū + b)

You can make a cube out of a tube, too.
You will need a tube and some tools.
The tools you will use are scissors and a spoon.
Use scissors to cut the tube.
Cut two small parts [about 1 ½ inch] off the tube.
Cut one of the parts to make it even smaller.
Use a spoon as a tool to make the small parts flat.
Fold and bend the tube parts into the shape of a cube.
Push the small part of the cube into the bigger part.
You can use glue to keep the cube parts together.
