State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will make a zone of cones and will read and write words with the long o_e spelling, such as zone, cone, and stone.
Make a word zone
- Help the children make paper cones using the pattern (found below).
- Turn some cones upside down to make traffic cones.
- Let the children block off an area with the traffic cones.
- Place word cards (found below) in the word zone.
- Allow the children to choose a card from the word zone and read the word.
- Let the children crumple the word into a paper ball and save it for the next activity.
Set up an ice cream cone zone
- Fill a cone with crumpled balls of paper to make an ice cream cone.
- Place the traffic cones in another area of the room.
- Have the children label the zone Ice Cream Cone Zone.
- Put one cone in the Ice Cream Cone Zone.
- Call the cone a “lone cone” and explain that lone means alone.
Make a stone zone from cones
- Place some more traffic cones in another area of the room.
- Have the children make a sign that says Stone Zone.
- Let the children draw stones (circles) or cut out the pictures of stones (found below) and label each one stone.
- Put the paper stones in the Stone Zone.
Let stones lead to the Ice Cream Cone Zone
- Place some paper stones in a path that leads to the Ice Cream Cone Zone.
- Allow the children to follow the stones.
- Let the children trade the written word stone for an ice cream cone from the Ice Cream Cone Zone.
Set up a zone for pine cones
- Help the children set up traffic cones to make a new zone.
- Let the children write Pine Cone Zone and place their labels on the cones surrounding the zone.
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word-building cards (found below), help the children make words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
- Change the beginning consonant(s): cone→ zone, lone→ bone, stone→ drone
- Change the vowel: cone→ cane, lone→ line, drove→ drive
- Change the ending consonant: cone→ code, cone→ cope, drone→ drove
Read target words in texts
- Read the Ice Cream Cone Zone target text (found below) to the children, then engage them in reading the text with you.
- Allow the children to read the Ice Cream Cone Zone again, fading support.
- Read Cones to Make Zones (found below) with the children and read it a second time, fading support.
Write about the activity
- Introduce a word wall displaying target words (e.g., cone, stone, zone, lone, alone, tone, drone, phone, prone, shone, throne).
- Have the children write about cones to make zones with pine cones, ice cream cones, and stones.
