State and model the objective 
Tell the children that they will explore the shore and that they will read and write words spelled with -ore: more, shore, store, albacore, explore.

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Explore the shore and find a store 
    • Show the children the picture of a shore (see graphic below) and explain that a shore is the land close to the edge of water, like the beach along an ocean.
    • Have the children label the shore by writing shore.
    • Allow the children pretend to explore a shore and ask them what they see as they explore.
    • Show the picture of an ice cream store on a shore.
    • Let the children pretend to buy ice cream from a store along the shore then have the children ask for more.
  • Explore the shore and fish for albacore
    • Ask the children what more they see as they continue to explore the shore.
    • Show the picture of an albacore (see graphic below). Explain that an albacore is a type of tuna fish.
    • Set out goldfish crackers (or albacore cards -- see below) on the picture of the shore and tell the children the fish are albacore (optional).
    • Let the children pretend to fish for albacore in a boat along the shore.
  • Explore the shore and find -ore words 
    • Set out the seashell word cards (see below) around the room. 
    • Have the children pretend to explore the shore and find seashells with -ore words.
    • Let the children read the words as they find the shells along the shore.

Apply the skill

  • Read target words in texts
    • Engage the children in reading the target text Explore the Shore (see below) together with the group. 
    • Have the children make a list of the words spelled with -ore.
    • Read the text again fading support.
    • Repeat with the target text Explore a Store at the Shore.
  • Write about the activity using target words/patterns
    • Give each child a paper and pencil and let them write words from dictation: shore, store, more, explore, core, tore, bore, wore, core.
    • Have the children write about their experience exploring the shore.  (I saw a shore. I saw a store at the shore. etc.)
