Go Slowly As You Mow

Objective

Read and write words with long o spellings –o and –ow.

Recognize that both –o and –ow spellings have the same pronunciation.

Materials:

  • Growing green grass graphic (see below) printed on green paper
  • Lawnmower graphic (see below)
  • Word cards (see below)
  • Go Slowly As You Mow target text (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children they will make grass grow and mow the grass and they will read and write words spelled with –o and –ow: go, no, so, oh, grow, mow, row, low, slowly.

 

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Make Grass Grow in Rows
    • Print the “growing green grass” graphic (see below) onto green paper and follow instructions (fold and cut where indicated).
    • Tape each folded green paper as directed below, in rows on the table.
    • Have the children pretend to watch the grass grow in rows.
    • Place word cards (see below) in rows among the grass.
    • Have the children go slowly along each row and read the word on each card.
  • Go slowly as you mow
    • Have the children use the lawnmower graphic as they pretend to mow the grass.
    • Exclaim, “Oh no! Go slowly! Be careful to cut the grass in rows.”
    • Have the children write the sentence “I go slowly as I mow.”

 

Apply the skill (Choose from the activities below)

  • Read target words in texts
    • Engage the children in reading the target text Go Slowly As You Mow (see below):
    • Have the children write a list of the –o and –ow words from the text. Emphasize that these words are all pronounced with a long o sound, but are spelled with different patterns.
    • Read the text again fading support.
  • Write about the activity using target words/patterns
    • Give each child a paper and pencil and let them write words from dictation: go, no, so, oh, grow, mow, row, low, slowly. Let them write about what they did while mowing grass in rows (e.g., I can go slowly and mow grass in a row. I can mow grass and cut it so low. I can watch grass grow up in a row.)
