Literacy Activities
Get a snack at the Snack and Shack Shack

  • Set up an area of the room as the Snack and Shack Shack with snack description cards (found below) on display.
  • Have the children go to the Snack and Shake Shack to get a sack of pretend snacks.
  • Have the children read a list of items for sale and decide which snacks they would like.
  • Let the children put pretend snacks in their sack and then shake the sacks with snacks.

More Practice
Read and write target words

  • Create a T-chart to contrast short- and long-vowel words, similar to the example T-chart provided below (e.g., lick vs like).
  • Lay out the short- and long-vowel words on cards (found below).
  • Put a short-vowel word on the short-vowel side of the T-chart and put the corresponding long-vowel word on the long-vowel side.
  • Let the children write in the missing short- or long-vowel words on the T chart (e.g., write sake to go with sack or bit to go with bite).

Engage the children in interactive reading

  • Read The Snack and Shake Shack target text to the children.
  • Read the text with the children, fading support.
  • Have the children engage in paired reading where one child reads to a peer.
  • Have the children change roles so that the other child takes a turn to read.
  • Let the children read the Lick Drips from Sticks and Cones target text to themselves and then with a peer.

The Snack and Shake Shack

What’s for sale at the Snack and Shake Shack?
The Snack and Shake Shack sells shakes and snacks.
Let’s go to the Snack and Shake Shack to get snacks and shakes.
We’ll hop over to the snack shack and hope to get snacks.
We’ll hope to get snacks that we like to lick.
We’ll fill up sacks with . . .
       a can of candy canes,
a tub of sticks to lick,
       a tube of gummy snakes,
cake to bake when we get back home,
       and so much more!
We will fill our sacks with lots of snacks.
We’ll also get a shake to go with our snacks.
We will shake our sack of snacks.
But for goodness sake, we won't shake our shake.
We will take our shake home.

Lick Drips from Sticks and Cones

Don’t put a shake in a sack.
Sip the shake from a cup.
And lick any drips from the side of the cup.

Don’t put ice cream in a sack.
Get ice cream in a cone or on a stick.
Find a site to sit and lick ice cream from the cone or stick.

Drips Slip Down and Slid off an Ice Cream Cone

Drips and drops slip and slide down the side of a cone.
The drips and drops slid off the cone and landed in my lap.

Drips and drops slip and slide down the side of a stick.
The drips and drops slid off the stick and landed in my lap.

I like to lick up drips and drops from a cone or stick.
I don’t like to lick up drips and drops that land in my lap.
