State the Objective
Tell the children that they will make rope from strands of string and that they will read and write short-vowel and long-vowel words, such as rope, make, like, thin, thick, string, and strong.
Literacy Activities
Introduce target words
- Show the children the short- and long-vowel target words and read the words together.
- Explain that the silent e at the end of the long-vowel words makes the vowel say its name.
Play with rope and string
- Read the A Rope is Like a String target text (see below) with the children.
- Show the children rope and string and explain the differences between the two.
- Show the How to Make Yarn Rope video, by Babble Dabble Do, and tell the children that the video is about yarn, but they’ll be using string (optional).
- Show the children how to make rope by twisting strands of string and have them follow the instructions in the video (optional).
- Have the children read and sort short- and long-vowel word cards (see below).
- Have the children write short- and long-vowel words from dictation (e.g., rope, make, like, thin, thick, strong).
- Help the children write a sentence about rope and string (e.g., Rope is thick; String is thin; We twist string; We make rope with string; Rope is made from lots of strings).
Contrast the number of letters and sounds
- List silent-e target words (e.g., rope, make, like) and remind the children that the silent e makes the vowel say its name.
- Write a silent-e word (e.g., rope) and ask:
- How many letters does it have? (e.g., four: r + o + p + e)
- How many sounds does it have? (e.g., three: r + ō + p)
