Objective

Read and write long-a-silent-e words and use a verb with multiple meanings (i.e., wave).

  • Strips of fabric to make waves (optional)

Overview

The children will make waves, wade in waves, and read words with the long-a-silent-e pattern, such as wave, gave, game, name, made, wade.

Practice the skill within an activity
Make a paper wave and give a wave 

  • State that wave can be movement of water or a greeting. 
  • Let the children create a wave with a piece of paper (see graphics below).
  • Wave to the children and let them wave to each other.
  • Have the children write wave on paper waves.
  • Let the children wave with their paper waves (e.g., “I gave you a wave with my wave.”).

Wade in waves

  • Let the children move strips of paper or cloth up and down to make waves.
  • Let other children wade through the waves.
  • Make some waves be tame (gently move the waves up and down).
  • Contrast tame waves with waves that are not tame.
  • Let the children "wade" through waves that are tame and not tame.
  • Say, “don’t make waves” to ask children to stop waving the waves.

Apply the skill
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds

  • With word blending cards (see below), have children make new words by changing the beginning or ending sound:
    • wave —> brave; rave —> pave; fame —> name; tame —> lame
    • cave —> came; save —> same; gave—>game; make —> made

Read target words and patterns introduced in the activity (see text below)

  • Read the text Make Waves with the class.
  • Have the children find words with the long-a-silent-e pattern.
  • Read the text again, fading support. 

Write about the activity using target words and patterns

  • Ask the children to write words from dictation: wave, gave, made, came, tame, wade, brave, and save
  • Let children write about what they did with waves (e.g., I made a wave be tame. We came to wade in tame waves.)

The waves were tame, and Dave did not have to be brave.
But then the waves got big and strong.
And Dave had to be brave to swim in the big waves.
Dave was brave when he swam in waves that were not tame.

Wave to a Friend and Make Waves

There are two kinds of wave.
They are not the same.
One wave is used to say hello to a friend.
You can wave to a friend.
Another wave is found in the ocean.
You can see a wave in the ocean.
We can wave to our friends and we can make waves.
