Objective

Read and write words spelled with the long o silent e vowel pattern (e.g., nose, rose).

Materials:

  • Fake or real roses (spray fake rose with perfume or other sweet smelling scents)
  • Word cards
  • Pick a Rose target text

 

State and model the objective

Tell the children that today they each get to pick a rose and do a pose while they listen for words that are spelled with the long o silent e vowel pattern (e.g., rose, nose).

 

Practice the skill within an activity

  • Pick a rose
    • Let each child pick out a rose. After he or she picks a rose, have children exclaim, “You chose a rose!”
    • Instruct each child to put the rose to his or her nose.
    • Have each child pose with the rose.
    • Continue activity until each child has had a chance to pick a rose.

 

Apply the skill

  • Read words introduced in the activity
    • Have the children read the Pick a Rose target text. Instruct the children to draw a circle around the words that have the long o with silent e.
    • Lay out the word cards. Have the children pick out the o with silent e cards. Read through the cards together.
