Literacy Activities

Rhyme with lot for a spot in the lot

  • Draw lines or use sticks to make slots in a parking lot (see example below).
  • Let the children place a pretend car in a slot each time they rhyme with lot.
  • Give the children examples of words that rhyme with lot (e.g., slotnotgothot).
  • Help the children think of a word that rhymes with lot:
    • Cot ends with ot.”
    • “What about dotDot rhymes with lot.”
    • “Does spot rhyme with lot?”

Make a dot in the lot

  • Tell the children that they will put dots in slots in the lot.
  • List -ot words (e.g., lot, dot, slot, spot, got, hot, not, cotrot) and point out that they all end in ot.
  • Help the children read the list of words.
  • Read the Find a Slot in the Lot target text (see below) with the children.
  • Let the children put a dot in a slot each time they hear an -ot word in the text.
  • Make comments such as, “You got a spot in the lot!”

Segment -ot words

  • Segment -ot words into their initial sound and ending, and have children blend them into words:
    •  ot lot
    • d + ot = dot
    • h + ot = hot
    • ot got
  • Have the children blend individual sounds to make a word:
    • lot
    • d + o + t = dot
    • h + o + t = hot
    • g + o + t = got

Write -ot words

  • Fill in the initial letter
    • Write -ot with a space in front of it.
    • Tell the children to put an L in front of -ot to make lot.
    • Repeat with other -ot words (e.g., gotnotdotpot).
  • Write words from dictation
    • Show the children the parking lot.
    • Have the children write -ot words from dictation in each of the lot’s slots (e.g., potrotcotlotslotdothot).
