State the Objective
Tell the children that they will try to get rid of a lid by skidding it from kid to kid as they read and write words that end in -id, such as lid, slid, and did.

Literacy Activities
Play the Get Rid of the Lid game

  • Write -id words (e.g., kid, lid, did, rid, bid, hid) on the lids or on small pieces of paper attached to the lids.
  • Tell the children to pass a lid from kid to kid.
  • Have the children chant “get rid of the lid” as they pass the lid.
  • When the chanting stops, have the child with the lid hold it up.
  • Read the -id word written on the lid out loud.
  • Repeat the game until each child has had the lid (optional).

Read -id words on lids

  • Turn the lids over and have the children sit around them.
  • Have a child choose a lid to turn over, and help them read the -id word.
  • Let the child get rid of the lid by sliding it to another child.
  • Have the child say, “I slid the lid.”
  • Repeat until all the lids have been turned over and slid.
  • Let the children read the -id word on their lid to another kid.

Make new -id words

  • With letter cards, have the children make a word, then change it to a new word by changing the initial consonant:
    • kid did
    • lid hid
    • rid bid

Read I Can Get Rid of a Lid

  • Read the I Can Get Rid of a Lid target text (see below) with the children.
  • Read the target text again, fading support.
  • Have the children underline the -id words in the text.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Let the children fill in blank spaces in sentence templates using -id words:
    • We got ____ (rid) of a ____ (lid).
    • We got to ____ (skid) a ____ (lid).
    • We ____ (slid) a ____ (lid) from ____ (kid) to ____ (kid).
    • We read the word  ____ (lid, hid, rid, etc.).
  • Write the -id ending with a space in front of it.
  • Have the children help write -id words by adding letters in front of the ending (e.g., r, d, k, sl, sk).
  • Change the initial letters to create new words.
