Literacy Activities

Tap, Tap, Clap

  • Invite the children to join you in clapping and tapping.
  • Have the children echo each line in the Tap, Tap, Clap chant (see below).
  • Let the children clap and tap with the song, changing the style as desired.
  • Point out to the children that clap and tap rhyme.
  • Help the children think of more words that rhyme with tap.

Recognize rhyming words

  • Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g., tap and clap).
  • Ask the children to snap their fingers if the words rhyme.
  • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., cap, strap; lap, trap; sap, map; gap, shoe; nap, rap).

Read and write -ap words

  • Show the children the -ap word ending.
  • Write the letter t in front of the -ap ending. Help the children read the word.
  • Erase the t, then repeat with the letters ms, and g.
  • Have children write -ap words from dictation (e.g., tapmapsapgap).

Blend spoken sounds into words

  • Segment an -ap word into its sounds and ask the children what word you are saying:
    • map

 OR

  • map
  • If children don’t answer after 2-3 seconds, pronounce the whole word:
    •  “MapMap makes map!”
  • Repeat with more words (e.g., captapnaprapgap).
