Tell the children that they will learn dance steps as they read and write words that rhyme with hop, such as mop, stop, flop, and drop.

Learn dance steps

• Tell the children that hop, drop, flop, bop, pop, and mop rhyme. 
• Teach the children dance steps that go with -op words:
  • Flop: let your upper body be floppy
  • Mop: pretend to mop the floor
  • Bop: nod your head 
  • Pop: flick hands open and shut like popping popcorn
  • Stop: hold up a hand as if stopping traffic
  • Drop: pretend to drop things 
  • Hop: hop on one foot
• Call out dance steps (e.g., flop, mop, hop), and perform them with the children.
• Play music, hum a tune, or clap a rhythm during the dance.

Segment and read -op words 

• Segment -op words into their initial sound and ending, such as:
  
  • m + op = mop
  • h + op = hop
  • p + op = pop
• Have the children blend the parts to make a word (e.g., mop).
• As they form words, let the children perform the corresponding actions. 
• Segment the same words into individual sounds, such as:
  
  • m + o + p = bop
  • h + o + p = hop
  • p + o + p = pop 
• Have the children blend the sounds into words and perform the actions again.
• Read a list of -op words (e.g., hop, stop, mop, pop, bop), and point out how they have the same ending.  
• Have the children help you read the list of rhyming words.
• Read the We Can Hop and Bop target text (see below).
• Let the children help read the -op words in the text. 

 Write dance steps

• Have the children help you list the dance step words (e.g., hop, bop, pop, mop).
• Have a child perform a dance step while the others write the matching -op word.
