Lesson Plan

Target Words:

Materials:

  • Paper folded into a sack*
  • Drawing of snacks that can crack (e.g., cracker, pretzel, cookie)*
  • Backpack or sack (optional)
  • Black marker, crayon, or object (optional)

State the Objective

Tell the children that they will pack a black sack as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with sack, such as pack, black, and snack

Literacy Activities

Make a sack

  • Show the children how to make a “sack” by folding a paper in thirds lengthwise and folding the bottom up to the top (see photos below).
  • Unfold the sack and let the children re-fold it.
  • Make a black mark on the sack or find something black to put inside it (optional).
  • Write black on the sack and tell the children you have a black sack.
  • Point out how black and sack rhyme.
  • Tell the children that you can pack snacks in the sack.

Write -ack words on the sack

  • Decide which side of the paper sack is the back.
  • Write the word back on the back of the sack.
  • Write the words pack and sack on the sack.

Crack pretend snacks

  • Tell the children that you have a pretend cracker, a type of snack.
  • Pretend to crack the snack into two pieces.
  • Say crack, extending the /kr/ and emphasizing the -ack.

Pack a black sack with snacks  

  • Explain that some snacks can crack, and give examples (e.g., chips, cookies, crackers).
  • Say, "Pack the sack with a snack that cracks.”
  • Have the children pretend to pack the sack with real or pretend snacks that crack (see example below). 
  • Find something black to put in the sack and say, “Pack the snack sack with something black.”  

Rhyme with pack

  • Tell the children that you can think of a word that rhymes with snackblack!
  • Ask the children if different words rhyme with snack (e.g., packtracktacksackrack). 
  • Help the children think of a word that rhymes with pack.
