State the Objective 
Tell the children that they will find bugs and give them hugs as they learn about words that rhyme with bug, such as hug, rug, snug, and mug.

Literacy Activities
Hug a bug

• Make drawings of bugs by following the examples below.
• Tie or tape strings to the bugs (optional).
• Hide the bugs and have the children search for them.
• Chant, "Bug, bug, bug. Where are the bugs?"
• Have the children hug the bugs when they find them and say, “Hug a bug!"
• Let the children tug the bugs to the rug (optional).
• Chant the Tug, Tug, Tug target text (see below) with the children.

• Have the children make the bugs snug in a mug on the rug (optional).

   

Meet my bug

• Point to the words as you read the Meet My Bug target text (see below).
• Read the text again and have the children find the -ug words.
• Model reading the words tug, hug, and bug:
  • Produce the initial consonant sound.
  • Add the -ug ending.
  • Blend the parts together to make the word.

Practice rhyming 

• Remind the children of words that rhyme with bug (e.g., hug, rug, mug, tug).
• Help the children think of a word that rhymes with bug:  
  • "How about rug? Do bug and rug rhyme?” (Nod your head yes.)
  • "Do mug and bug rhyme?" (Nod your head yes.)

March to blend and segment -ug words

• Have the children take three steps as they produce the sounds /b/, /u/, and /g/.
• Have them take a big step as they blend the sounds and produce the word bug.  
• Repeat with the words rug, mug, and hug.
