State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will play a game called "Cheer for the Champion" as they practice saying the /ch/ sound in words that begin with the letters ch, such as choose, cheer, champion, and check.

Literacy Activities
Cheer for the Champion!

  • Show the children each of the word cards, read them aloud, and explain what they mean.
  • Have the children think of an action for each word.
  • Demonstrate and explain how to play “Cheer for the Champion” (similar to charades).
    • Choose a word card.
    • Do actions to help the class guess the word (give ideas and clues where necessary).
    • When the children guess the word, have them cheer for the person who guessed the word and shout, “Cheer for the champion!”
  • Repeat the game, having different children choose and act out the /ch/ words.

More Practice
Identify the target sound

  • Have one of the children choose one of the word cards and read it out loud, emphasizing the /ch/ sound (e.g., “/ch/, /ch/, cheer.” Support as needed).
  • Ask for a volunteer to write the word on the board (allow the volunteer to look at the word card for help, or have the children help the volunteer).
  • When all the /ch/ words have been written on the board, read them together.

Write the target letter

  • Write the ch words on the board or on chart paper.
  • Read them as a class and emphasize the /ch/ sound.
  • Have the children come up to the board and circle the letters ch in the words.
