  • dog
  • dirty
  • duck
  • dollar
  • dish

Materials:

  • Paper plates
  • Towel and dish drainer (optional)
  • Picture cards*
  • Dot stickers, dot paints, or markers

*Items included below.

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will dry dirty dishes as they practice saying the /d/ sound in words that start with the letter D, such as dish, dirty, dog, den, and dip.

Literacy Activities
Do the dirty dishes

  • Attach the picture cards to paper plates.
  • Tell the children that the plates are dirty dishes because they have pictures all over them.
  • Have the children do (clean) the dirty dishes by removing the pictures.
  • Instruct the children to circle the letter D in the word on each picture card, and emphasize that the letter D makes the /d/ sound.

Dots on a dish

  • Allow the children to decorate a paper plate with dot stickers (or have them use dot paints or markers to create dots).
  • Help the children write the uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d all over their dishes, and have them say the /d/ sound each time they write a letter.
  • Allow the children to pretend to wash and dry the dishes before stacking them in a dish drainer (optional).

More Practice
Identify the target sound

  • Make a word wall of simple words that begin with the letter D (e.g., dot, dog, dug, dab, den, dig, dip).
  • Help the children identify the beginning and ending sounds of each word on the list by tapping their head for the beginning sound of the word and toes for the rest of the word (e.g., dot = /d/ tap head and /ot/ tap toes).
  • Point out that all of the words have the /d/ sound at the beginning of the word and start with the letter D.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d several times on small pieces of paper or sticky notes.
  • Allow the children to place the sticky notes on a dirty dish (paper plate).
  • Have the children produce the /d/ sound each time they place a letter on the dish.
