State and model the objective

Tell the children they will learn a song called Do as I’m Doing (kind of like follow the leader) as they practice saying the /d/ sound in words that begin with the letter D such as dance, dig, dip, and do.

Practice the skill within an activity

Do as I’m Doing

  • Teach the children the song Do as I’m Doing (see song lyrics below).
  • Have the children choose an action word card and help them read the card, emphasizing the beginning /d/ sound (e.g., /d/ - /d/ - dance).
  • Let one child be the leader and demonstrate how to do the action on the card.
  • Have everyone do the action while singing the song.
  • Repeat, choosing different children to choose the action card and be the leader: dance, dig, drop, dive, drag, drum.

Apply the skill (choose from the following)

Do D actions

  • Show the children the letter D then ask them to name the letter and say the sound.
  • List several actions from the activity (i.e., dig, dance, dip, drag, dive, drive, drum, drop) on the board. Let the children write the letter D in each word on the list.
  • Have the children take turns choosing an action from the list on the board, acting it out in front of the class, and having the other children guess the action.
  • Once the children have guessed the correct action, have them point to the D in the word on the board.

Write the target letter (see below)

  • Have the children write the letter D in the air while singing Do As I’m Doing.
  • Help the children write the letter D and the lowercase letter d, while producing the /d/ sound.

Activity: Do As I'm Doing

  • Have your child teach you the Do as I'm Doing song (use words provided if necessary). 
  • Take turns choosing an action card and leading the song Do as I'm Doing, acting out the chosen word as you sing the song.
  • Read the action cards again with your child and have him or her underline the letter D in each word.
  • Help your child discover things in the room that begin with the letter D.
  • Write a list of the things your child found and let him or her write the beginning letter D for each word.
  • Have your child find the letter D and d in the lyrics to the Do as I'm Doing song.
  • The activity can be repeated several times.
