Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • eggs
  • everywhere
  • empty
  • envelope

Materials:

  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Picture and word cards
  • Envelope
  • Egg carton
  • Writing practice page

Overview
The children will find eggs everywhere as they practice saying the short /e/ sound in words that begin with the letter E, such as egg, everywhere, envelope, and excited.

Literacy Activities
Find eggs everywhere

  • Place the E and non-E picture cards in plastic Easter eggs and hide the eggs around the room.
  • Have the children find the eggs and make the eggs explode (open) to find the picture inside.
    • If the picture shows a word that starts with E, have the children put the picture in an envelope.
    • If the picture does not show a word that starts with E, have the children discard the picture.
  • Let the children put the empty eggs in the egg carton.
  • Repeat the activity with word cards in the eggs instead of picture cards.
  • Write the uppercase E and lowercase e on the whiteboard, then have the children write the letters E and e everywhere in the air with their finger while saying the short /e/ sound.

More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • Have the children identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words by tapping their shoulder (beginning), their elbow (middle) and their fingers (end) (e.g., get = /g/ tap shoulder, /e/ tap elbow, /t/ tap fingers). Point out that all of the words have the /e/ sound in the middle.
    • bed = b + e + d
    • let = l + e + t
    • men = m + e + n

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the uppercase letter E and lowercase letter e, then draw pictures of things they found in the exploding eggs that start with the /e/ sound.
