fuzz frenzy dance
Fuzz Frenzy Dance
Objective
Associate the uppercase letter F and lowercase letter f with the /f/ sound in words such as freeze, flap, and fly.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- fuzz
- flap
- furry
- feel
- fold
- flip
Materials:
- A folder with a flap (or any container)
- Fuzz (e.g., fuzzy yarn, fur, felt, lint from the dryer)
- Action cards
- Frenzy, flow, and freeze signs
- Selections of fast “frenzy” music and slow “flowing” music (optional)
- The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens (HMH Books for Young Readers, 2005) (optional)
Overview
The children will have a fuzz frenzy as they practice saying the /f/ sound in words such as fuzz, fold, flip, and frenzy.
Literacy Activities
Feel the fuzz
- Read the story The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens (optional) and tell the children they will have their own fuzz frenzy.
- Explain that frenzy means wild excitement.
- Have the children sit in a circle and each find a piece of fuzz from the folder with a flap (or container).
- Read the action cards with the children and let them perform each action:
- Feel the fuzz (e.g., rub the fuzz on the face, feet, fingers, and forehead).
- Let the fuzz fall (e.g., drop the fuzz on the ground).
- Fold the fuzz (e.g., fold the fuzz in half).
- Fit the fuzz in a fist (e.g., hold the fuzz inside a fist).
- Flip the fuzz (e.g., flip the fuzz up into the air).
- Let fuzz float (e.g., throw the fuzz into the air and watch it float to the ground).
- Have the children repeat alliterative phrases such as “/f/, /f/, feel the fuzz on your face. The fuzz feels fabulous on my face!” throughout the activity, emphasizing that words beginning with the /f/ sound start with the letter F.
Have a fuzz frenzy dance
- Play or hum fast music and hold up the “frenzy” sign.
- Explain that the children will dance around with their fuzz in a fast, excited way during the “frenzy” music.
- Play or hum slow music and hold up the “flow” sign.
- Explain that the children will dance with the fuzz in a slow, flowing way during the “flow” music.
- Hold up the “freeze” sign.
- Explain that when the music stops, they must freeze and remain frozen until the music begins again.
- Alternate playing or humming music while holding up the corresponding signs. Allow the children to dance in a fuzz frenzy, dance with flowing fuzz, and freeze when the music stops.
More Practice
Read target words
- Write a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter F.
- Read the list with the children and have them circle the letter F in each word, emphasizing that the words all start with the /f/ sound.
Write the target letter
- Help the children write the uppercase letter F and lowercase letter f while they produce the /f/ sound.
- Have the children cut out their letters and attach them to the fuzz folder.
