Go Get the Gold
Objective
Associate the uppercase letter G and lowercase letter g with the /g/ sound in words such as go, gift, and gold.

- Gold or yellow crayons, or glue and gold glitter (optional)
- Two gold gift boxes
Overview
The children will race for gold stars and practice saying the /g/ sound in words that begin with the letter G, such as gold, green, and gift.
Literacy Activities
Go get gold stars
- Cut out the stars and color them gold or yellow, or cover them with gold glitter (optional).
- Set up the gold stars and gold gift boxes on opposite ends of the room.
- Write the letters G and g on a whiteboard, demonstrate the /g/ sound, and invite the children to say words that start with the /g/ sound, such as gold, gift, glitter, and go.
- Separate the children into two teams.
- Explain the goal of the game and demonstrate how to play:
- The children line up by the gold gift boxes.
- The first child runs to the opposite wall.
- The child grabs a gold glitter star and writes the letter G on the star.
- The child runs back saying, “I got a /g/, /g/, gold star with a G.”
- The child places the gold star in the team’s gold gift box.
- The game repeats with the next child in line.
- Whenever a new runner starts, have the team shout, “/g/, /g/, go!”
- Repeat until all the gold stars are gone.

More Practice
Identify the target sound
- Give a star to each child.
- Slowly read a list of words with the /g/ and non-/g/ sounds (e.g., gold, glitter, cat, go, fish) out loud.
- Have the children raise their stars in the air when they hear a word beginning with the /g/ sound.

Objective

- Gift box
- Writing practice page
Activity: Go for the Gold
- Cut out the stars and then color the stars gold or yellow, or cover them with gold glitter (optional).
- Scatter the gold stars at one end of the room.
- Label the gift box with the word gift and place it at the opposite end of the room.
- To begin, say with your child, "Get set! Go for the Gold!"
- Have your child run across the room, grab a gold star, write a G on the star, run back saying, "I got a /g/, /g/, gold star with a G," and put the gold star in the gift box.
- Repeat until all the gold stars are gone.
- Help your child practice writing the letters G and g while saying the /g/ sound for each letter.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
