Objective
Associate the uppercase letter J and lowercase letter j with the /j/ sound as in jingle, jump, and joy.

- Something for each child to jingle (e.g., bells, keys on a ring)
- Large letter cards
- Small letter cards
- Jump for Joy target text
- Jack and Jill target text
Overview
The children will pretend to be joyful as they jump and jingle and say the /j/ sound in words such as jingle, joy, and juggle.
Literacy Activities
Jump for Joy
- Show the children the letter J and remind them that J makes the /j/ sound.
- Have the children stand up and follow your instructions as you say each part of the activity routine.
- Hold up the large letter cards as you read the Jump for Joy target text.
- Repeat the chant, having the children join in with the words while they perform the actions.
- Make a list of the words from the activity that begin with the /j/ sound (e.g., joyfully, jumping, jump, joy, jingling, jingle, juggling, juggle). Have the children circle the letter j in each word on the list.
More Practice
Jump for J
- Hide the small letter cards around the room.
- Have the children search for the letters.
- When children find a letter J or j, have them say the /j/ sound and jump up and down.
Read target words in a text
- Read the Jump for Joy target text to the children.
- Have the children circle every letter J and j.
- Read the text again and have the children say the /j/ sound each time you come to a letter J or j.
- Repeat with the Jack and Jill target text.

- Do the actions together as you read the Jack and Jill target text.
- Have your child circle the letters J and j in the poem, and emphasize that the letter J makes the /j/ sound.
- Have your child write the letters J and j while saying the /j/ sound (support as needed).
- Play a game called Jump for a J:
- Hide letter cards around the room, then have your child search for the letters.
- Together with your child, jump for joy and say the /j/ sound every time a J or j is found.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
