Overview
The children will get ready for a road race in a red race car as they practice saying the /r/ sound in words such as rev, road, and ride.

Literacy Activities
Get ready for a road race

  • Have the children pretend to get ready for the road race by echoing what you do and say:
    • Remember to put gas in the car.
    • Reach for your seatbelt.
    • Turn off the radio.
  • Emphasize the /r/ sound in each instruction.

Rev the engine

  • Give each child a paper plate or paper circle to use as a race car steering wheel.
  • Say, “Rev the engine! Ready, set, ride!”
  • Point out that road, race, rev, ready, and ride all begin with the letter r, which makes the /r/ sound.
  • Have the children make the /r/ sound as they pretend to rev the engine of their race cars.
  • Sing The Race Car Wheels song to the tune of "Wheels on the Bus," making up actions for each verse.

Road race

  • Make a race track on the floor using masking tape.
  • Place R letter cards along the race track.
  • Have the children pretend to drive along the road and say the /r/ sound each time they pass each letter card.

More Practice
Read target words in a text

  • Read the text of The Race Car Wheels to the children.
  • Have the children find and underline the letters and r throughout the text, saying the /r/ sound each time they underline the letter.
  • Give the children a paper steering wheel.
  • Read the text again and have the children pretend to rev their engines every time they hear a word that starts with the /r/ sound.

Write the target letter

  • Have the children write the uppercase letter R and lowercase letter r on the race car graphic.
  • As the children write, point out the shapes included in the letters R and r (i.e., lines and circles).
  • Let the children color the race car red.
  • Have the children pretend to rev the engine of the red race car while saying the /r/ sound.
